The Real Time Monitor
Description
The Real time monitor overlays grid activity onto a 3D globe. Navigation around the globe is simple with the mouse's scroll wheel zooming in and out and left click + drag moving the globe. There is also a summary of the number of jobs running and scheduled across the globe on the screen. Each site that is connected to the Grid at the time is represented by circle at the location of the resources. If the site is not doing any grid work it is simply a yellow dot. However if the site is actively processing work then the site is a pulsing circle of magenta and green. This circle is a pie chart representing the proportion of jobs running at the site (the green segment) and jobs queued to be run (magenta segment). The maximum size of the circle is related to the total number of jobs at a site (both running and queued). The more jobs the bigger the circle gets. The size is a logarithmic scale to the base ten so the sites only grow as it reaches a new order of magnitude.
Also present on the RTM are the Workload Management Systems (WMS). These are the cyan triangles on the map. To use the Grid a scientist submits their job to a WMS which decides the best place for a job to be sent. The RTM cannot track where a scientist is when they submit their work but does know which WMS has been used. The application can then show the submitted job been sent from the WMS to a site to be processed. This is represented by a magenta line going from the WMS to a site somewhere on the Grid. Once a site has processed the work it returns the results back to the WMS. However the results can return in two states; completed successfully (yellow line returning from the site to the WMS) and failed (red line returning from the site to the WMS).
The RTM also keeps track of detailed information about each site on the Grid. Clicking on any site will result in a side window which details the jobs that have been run on the site in the previous 6 hours. There is also the ability to the work done by specific Virtual Organisations (VOs). These are groupings of scientisrs doing similar working using the Grid. Pressing the V key brings up the list of VOs currently using the Grid. Selecting and de-selecting certain boxes displays the subset of Grid jobs releated to the selected VOs.
The RTM also integrates with the GridGuide project When you click on a site through the RTM if that site has information on the GridGuide then there will be an extra option in the dialogue box to view a summary of the site's GridGuide profile.
